Autonomous Vehicles and Validation

Conference: Verification Futures 2019 (click here to see full programme)
Speaker: Michael Ellims, Ricardo
Presentation Title: Autonomous Vehicles and Validation
Abstract: Validation of autonomous vehicles presents probably insurmountable issues with complete validation. That is being able to validate all functions, for all road and traffic conditions, in all weathers, at all times of a day and year is a daunting task. In addition it may not be possible to define what we are attempting to validate.
Speaker Bio: Dr Ellims has been working with computers since 1975 and has BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science. His MSc Thesis investigated investigation of memory management in the SmallTalk-80 environment and his PhD examined automated test case generation.

Since the start of the 90’s he has been working in real time control of vehicle systems and worked in and lead the development of several engine control units and has worked on developing FADEC units, in-wheel electric motors and brake systems. Over time the focus has shifted from developing systems to evaluations of their functional safety and he has been involved in the review of ISO 61508 prior to issue and with ISO 26262 since its inception.
