About the Speaker

Efraín Gaxiola is an associate engineer on Silicon Labs technical staff, where he leads development of RF validation infrastructure and automated testing for next-generation Internet of Things systems-on-chip. He has held technical leadership roles in wireless, automotive, television, and radio tuners, and previously worked at Texas Instruments and Biotronik. Efraín holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University and a bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Mérida. He received Yucatán’s State Youth Prize in Academia, has published in peer-reviewed journals, earned multiple Silicon Labs Technical Symposium awards, and holds an automotive patent.

The Art of Silicon RF Validation: Measuring What a Radio Actually Does

Overview

Validating a wireless system-on-chip is not simply connecting an instrument and recording a number. At RF frequencies, cables, fixtures, interference, instrument limits, and software can become part of the result. This presentation explores how engineers separate true silicon behavior from measurement artifacts while evaluating figures of merit such as noise figure, receiver sensitivity, transmit power, modulation quality, unwanted emissions, interference susceptibility, and radiated performance. Attendees will learn how shielding, calibration, filtering, automation, temperature testing, repeatability, and correlation transform difficult measurements into trustworthy engineering conclusions—and why RF validation remains both an art and a science in practice.

Key Points

  • Why a test setup must be validated before conclusions are made about the silicon.
  • How receiver, transmitter, emissions, interference, and radiated tests reveal different dimensions of RF performance.
  • How calibration, repeatability, automation, and correlation turn individual measurements into trustworthy validation data.
